Relationship Patterns

Why do I pull away from people I love?

Why closeness can trigger withdrawal, and what pulling away may be protecting you from.

You care about someone, and then something shifts, a need, a conflict, a moment of vulnerability, and you feel the urge to create distance.

Pulling away can be a way to regain control, avoid disappointment, or protect yourself from needing someone who might not stay. It may look like busyness, irritability, or suddenly going quiet.

This pattern often confuses partners and confuses you, because the withdrawal does not match how much the relationship matters.

Therapy can help you notice the moment before distance takes over and understand what closeness has come to mean in your body.
